Description
The buck of a former post mill at Alder Carr Farm is a disused structure from the early 19th century. Originally built about half a mile to the north, it was relocated to its current site before 1880 and subsequently used as a dovecote. The building is timber framed and weatherboarded. When it served as a dovecote, it featured a hipped roof with gablets, which are no longer present. The interior is plastered and retains the nesting boxes, although the original floors have been removed. It is noteworthy that post mill bucks were sometimes dismantled and repurposed in this way, and this is believed to be the last remaining example in the country. The structure is of considerable interest because it was moved intact, with the original frame still preserved.
