Description

Nos. 4 and 6 Bridge Street are two houses built in the early 16th century, originally designed as a two-cell house with an integral shop beyond a cross-passage. The buildings are two storeys high and feature a timber-framed and plastered construction. The upper floor juts out towards the street, showcasing exposed joist-ends on knees. The timber-framing is visible from the first floor upwards, with close-studwork and long tension braces. The roof is covered with plain tiles and has end chimneys made of red brick.

The houses have early 19th-century small-pane sash windows, with No. 6 featuring panelled external shutters. The entrance doors are boarded and date from the 19th century. Internally, the original entrance doorway has an exposed arched head. The upper storey was originally undivided and includes arched-braced tie-beams and square crown-posts with two-way plank braces, suggesting it may have served as a workshop. There is a large chimney stack with a single open fireplace located within a narrower bay at the end of the hall. Additionally, there is a 17th-century two-storey wing at the rear. No. 4 underwent restoration in 1985.
