Description

Nos. 88 and 90 on High Street are a shop and house dating from the early to mid 16th century, with alterations made in the early 19th century. The building has a three-cell cross-passage entrance plan and stands two storeys tall. It is timber-framed, with the front encased in early 19th-century gault brick and the rear plastered. The first floor used to have a long-wall jetty extending towards the High Street. The roof is slated, with the rear slope and wing covered in plain tiles. There is an axial chimney made of gault brick. The windows are 19th-century sashes featuring flat arches of gauged brick, flush frames, and small panes. There are two 19th-century entrance doors, which were originally part of a subdivided house that was later reunited. These doors have four beaded fielded panels, broad reeded architraves with decorative paterae, and a cornice. The current butcher's shop occupies the service cell, which was previously separated by a close-studded partition; a shop may have existed on this prominent site from the beginning. Inside, heavy unmoulded framing is exposed, including some reused members in the hall and parlour. A short rear wing adjacent to Bridge Street is original, featuring a coupled-rafter roof, but it has been altered and extended in the 17th century. There are also good corner cupboards from the late 18th to early 19th century.
