Description
The cartlodge, located 50 meters south of Old Hall Farmhouse, dates from the 18th century or possibly the 17th century. It features three bays with aisles on both sides. The structure is timber-framed, with each side bay infilled with clay lump. Originally, the ends were open, but the rear wall is now covered with weatherboarding. The roof is thatched and half-hipped at the ends. The oak framing is pegged, and there are plank arch-braces extending up to the tie beams. The feet of the arcade posts were once interconnected and are still tied to the external walls. The roof has clasped purlins. This cartlodge is a notable example of a draw-through design, and the inclusion of aisles is an exceptional feature, possibly representing a rare survival of medieval form, as cartlodges from before the 17th century do not survive in Suffolk.
