Description

Bressumer Cottage is a cottage dating from the 16th century, with two stages of development and an extension added in the late 18th century. It is one storey high with attics and was originally built as a two-cell plan, which was extended to the right in the 18th century. The structure is timber-framed and plastered, topped with a thatched roof featuring two eyebrow casement dormers. There is an axial chimney made of red brick. The casements were replaced around 1980. On the left side, there is a 20th-century hipped entrance porch with a boarded door, and on the right, there is a single-storey 20th-century extension with a flat roof. The cottage consists of two cells from the original single-storey 16th-century house, which is of unusually small proportions. In the late 16th or early 17th century, an upper floor was added, with the binding beam projecting through the front and back walls. The interior features unchamfered floor joists, widely spaced studding, and a clasped purlin roof. In the late 18th century, the chimney was rebuilt, including a lintelled open fireplace in the hall, and an additional cell was added beyond it. Despite the 20th-century remodelling, the cottage is included for its unusual survival as a small 16th-century dwelling.
