Description
Abbey Farmhouse is a former farmhouse located in Woolpit, dating from the early 16th century with alterations made in the early 17th century and around 1970. The building has one storey and attics and features a two-cell open hall house with significant additions. It is constructed from timber framing and plaster, topped with a thatched roof. The roof includes a central 17th-century chimney made of pink and buff brick, along with another external gable chimney from the same period.
The farmhouse has an eyebrow casement dormer and mid-20th-century small-pane casements. The entrance door is boarded and dates from the 20th century. Inside, the two-bay open hall has a storeyed cell at the east end, with arch windbraced widely-spaced studding. The roof features a queen post design, although the open truss has been removed. The first-floor joists are unchamfered, and a 17th-century inserted first floor in the hall has on-edge joists. There is a wide lintelled open fireplace from this period in the second cell. Additionally, two single-cell extensions were added on either side in the 17th century; one includes a lintelled parlour fireplace, while the other features a diamond mullioned window.
