Description

Tot Hill House is a farmhouse dating from the early 17th century, with a core that dates back to the 16th century. It underwent significant remodelling around 1820. The house is two storeys tall with attics and features a three-cell cross-entry plan and three windows. The front elevation is timber-framed and encased in gault brick, which has a dentil course beneath the eaves, while the other walls are plastered. The roof is slated and has three early 19th-century segmental-headed dormers that are lead-clad, with small-pane sash windows.

An early or mid-17th-century axial chimney made of red brick has a sawtooth shaft. The windows, added around 1820, have cambered heads made of gauged brick, flush frames, and small-pane sashes. The doorway is positioned at the cross-entry and features a six-panelled door, with the lower panels fielded and the upper pair glazed. The hall and service cells likely originate from the 16th century and show signs of a previously much lower eaves-line. The parlour block to the right is an addition or rebuilding from around 1600, characterized by closely spaced studding, an ovolo-moulded bridging beam, and an ovolo-mullioned window. There are large back-to-back fireplaces in the parlour and hall, with the latter now blocked. The 1820 remodelling also included a rear outshut that is two storeys high.
