Description

Mendham Priory is a house dating from the early 19th century. It is constructed of white brick with a hipped slate roof. The five-bay entrance front features pilaster strips and inset sash windows with glazing bars, all under flat brick arches. French windows are present on the ground floor, leading to a pair of 3-panel doors, now behind 20th-century three-quarter-glazed doors, and an above segmental fanlight with ornamental glazing bars. A Roman Doric porch, supported by two pairs of fluted columns, has a frieze and mutule cornice, and a panelled soffit, standing on a three-stepped stone base. French windows are positioned above the porch, set within a broad segmental-headed recess. The three-bay garden front is in a matching style. To the right of the entrance is a lean-to conservatory; to the left, a doorway with fluted pilasters and an entablature, a glazed door, and a tall rectangular fanlight with intricate glazing bars, with panelled reveals. The entrance hall contains a mutule cornice, and both main ground floor rooms have enriched cornices, one featuring a central rosette.
