Description

Mendham Lodge is a farmhouse that dates back to the 16th century, with a later wing added in the early 17th century, marked by a panel in the base of the stack that indicates the year 1601. The building features a timber frame with plastering, some of which is designed to resemble ashlar. The roof is primarily covered with plain tiles, although some sections have been replaced with 20th-century concrete tiles. The structure has two storeys and an attic, with 18th to 19th-century small-paned casement windows that have wooden hoodmoulds above them. A 20th-century plank door provides the entrance, and there are two mid-20th-century gabled dormers on the later wing.

At the junction of the two ranges, there is an early 17th-century staircase wing that features a carved tie beam and drop finials. The later wing includes an internal stack with five detached circular shafts that have moulded brick decoration; these shafts have been rebuilt and altered, with two of them topped with star caps. The base of the stack contains a sunk panel with the date and a moulded brick surround. There is also a gable stack with two shafts in a matching style, but these date from the early 20th century.

Inside, there is a fine early 17th-century dog-leg staircase that leads to the attic, featuring turned balusters and newel posts with acorn finials, one of which has a carved rose. The later wing has an open ground floor fireplace with moulded stone jambs and a wooden lintel. The first-floor room to the left of the main range retains complete but altered lace oak panelling from the 16th or early 17th century and features a four-centre arched fireplace. The end room of the later wing has been modernised, and the first-floor ceiling has been raised.
