Description
Model Cottage is a house dating from the early 16th century, which was renovated in the 1980s. It features a timber frame with a rendered exterior and a thatched roof. The building has a two-cell layout with an end chimney and is 1½ storeys high. The windows are casements from the 1980s, and there is a boarded door leading into a cross-entry. The cottage has two gabled dormers with wide bargeboards and spike finials. The chimney stack at the left gable end was entirely rebuilt in the 1980s. Old oak corbels can be found below the wallplate ends on the right side.
Inside, the cottage has widely spaced studding, although some on the lower floor have been removed. There are reverse-curved braces at the service end and evidence of diamond-mullioned windows, with one intact on the upper floor. The ceilings feature heavy plain joists, and there is a mutilated bridging beam in the hall. The original stair trimming at the service end remains, but the stair itself, which had solid treads, was removed in the 1980s. The narrow end bay shows smoke-blackened timbers on the upper floor, indicating it may have originally had a smoke bay or smoke hood above the hearth. A central closed truss is present over the hall chamber, with a cambered tie beam, and the roof is constructed with coupled rafters.
