Description
These are former farm buildings, now two dwellings, dating back to the 16th century, with alterations and extensions in the 17th century. The main range was built in two phases, and a two-cell cross-wing was added to the rear (east). The buildings are timber-framed and plastered, with a thatched roof. They are two storeys high, with an attic in the cross-wing. Most of the casement windows are 20th century replacements, although some older casements remain on the south side, and there are two semi-glazed four-panel doors on the south elevation. Rebuilt chimney stacks are located inside each range.
Inside the main range, significant timber framing is visible on the upper floor. The eastern section, likely the earlier part, exhibits tension bracing and evidence of original windows with heavy diamond mullions. To the west of a central stack, there are three bays with reverse-curved braces, and a surviving diamond-mullioned window is present in the north wall. The roof has not been examined. The south cell of the cross-wing features an early to mid-17th century ceiling with an ovolo-moulded beam with nicked stop-chamfers and chamfered joists. The first floor has plain studding with no visible bracing. The roof is a clasped purlin roof with two-way arched wind bracing, and the stack appears to have been inserted into the north bay. There is also a newel attic stair. During renovations, a Latin inscription was discovered above a fireplace in the cross-wing, but it has since been concealed.
