Description

Bullshall Cottage is a former farmhouse that has been divided into two cottages. It dates back to the 16th century and was built in two phases. The structure is timber framed, mostly plastered, with the right gable end cement-rendered. It features a half-hipped thatched roof and stands two storeys tall, arranged in a three-cell cross-entry form. The cottage has various 20th-century small-paned casement windows, along with two 16th-century diamond-mullioned windows on the right gable end and another at the rear. There is a 20th-century semi-glazed entrance door and an additional mid-20th-century glazed door to the right.

Inside, there is an internal stack with a small square shaft and a small 19th-century stack against the left gable end. Lean-to additions are present at the rear, which may date from the 18th century or earlier, and against the left gable end. Much of the internal structure is exposed, with the hall featuring plain joists and a four-centre arched doorway by the stack. Beyond the hall is a later 1½-bay parlour addition, which has a ceiling with chamfered joists. The ceiling of the chamber above has been removed, except for a halved and reused moulded bridging beam. Both phases of the cottage have queen-post roofs, with the open tie beam in the later section supported by short arched braces.
