Description
Nos. 1-4 on The Green is a terrace of four cottages dating from the mid to late 18th century. The cottages are one storey high with attics and feature six windows. They are constructed with a timber frame and plastered exterior, showcasing some original herringbone pargetting in panels. The roof is covered with plain tiles and includes five gabled casement dormers; the three central dormers retain their original windows with transoms and small-pane metal casements. The three central windows on the ground floor are similar, while the others have 20th-century small-pane casements. Two of the cottages have original boarded entrance doors, while the other two feature 20th-century glazed panelled doors, with one having a lean-to porch. Cottage No. 1, located on the left, contains interesting reused timber with high-quality carving, including a beam with a trailing-vine motif, a wide open fireplace with a roll-moulded lintel, and roll-moulded ceiling joists that have been cut in half, all of which are early 16th-century work. The rafters are medieval and some are smoke-blackened.
