Description
St. George's School, located at Finborough Hall, is a preparatory school that was originally a country house built in 1795 for Roger Pettiward, designed by F. Sandys. The building features significant extensions from the mid-19th century and 20th century at the west end and is designed in the Tuscan style. It is constructed from gault brick with stucco dressings and has low-pitched hipped roofs covered in slate, along with a prominent eaves cornice adorned with large modillions.
The north entrance front consists of seven windows, including a full-height central semi-circular bay that is three windows wide and topped with a parapet. The building is two storeys tall and features small-pane sash windows with mid-19th century moulded stucco architraves and cornices. A semi-circular portico extends from the bay, supported by six Tuscan columns and featuring a flat entablature. The entrance has a pair of 19th-century part-glazed panelled doors and a square fanlight with radiating bars.
On the south front, there is a similar bay in the same position, but without the portico, flanked by tripartite sash windows on either side. The east front showcases a giant portico with four columns supporting a pediment. The significant mid-19th century extensions on the west side are primarily two storeys tall and include an Italianate tower and an orangery with an arcade of eight round-arched windows. Inside, there is a notable staircase featuring unusual wrought-iron balustrading.
