Description
The Old Forge is a house that was originally a blacksmith's residence, dating back to the early 16th century with some alterations made in the 17th century. It features a three-cell lobby-entrance plan that has been in place since the 17th century. The building is one storey high with attics and is constructed from timber framing with a plaster finish. The roof is covered with plain tiles, although it was previously thatched. There are axial chimneys made of 18th-century red brick. The house has two gabled dormers from the 18th century, which contain 19th-century casements, and two small-pane sash windows from the 19th century. A mid-20th-century gabled entrance porch with a boarded door is present, alongside a 19th-century stable-type boarded door on the right. Inside, the parlour on the left showcases good 16th-century close-studding and features a diamond mullioned window. The service cell to the right is an extension from the 17th or 18th century. The central chimney has an altered open fireplace, which is a 17th-century addition. There is also an attached range to the left, which has been significantly altered and was originally from the 17th or 18th century, formerly housing the forge.
