Description

The Church of St Andrew is a parish church built between 1874 and 1877 by architect R.M. Phipson, located on the site of a previous medieval church, possibly reusing some of its stonework. Designed in the Decorated style, the church features flint rubble construction with freestone dressings and extensive carved ornamentation. It has plaintiled roofs with parapet gables and comprises a nave, chancel, west tower, south porch, and a north transeptal chapel with an attached vestry and organ chamber.

The tower is a prominent feature, showcasing a richly moulded west doorway and window at its base. The belfry stage is octagonal and supported by flying buttresses, topped with a tall spire that has bands of pink and buff limestone. The exterior is adorned with good carved figures, particularly at the bases of the gables and elsewhere. Inside, the church has an arch-braced collar-beam roof with kingposts and retains complete original internal fittings. The stained glass is by Clayton and Bell.

Several notable monuments have been moved from the previous church, most of which are now located in the chapel. These include a wall monument to Charlton Wollaston, who died in 1729, featuring a putto unrolling a scroll, as well as other monuments to members of the Wollaston family from 1720, 1758, 1769, and 1797. A significant monument to Roger Pettiward, who died in 1833, was created by Sir R. Westmacott and includes a large relief of the Good Samaritan. The nave floor contains five marble slabs from the 17th and 18th centuries, and the tower wall has two 14th-century coped coffin slabs.
