Description
Apsley Cottage is a house located on Wellington Road, originally known as the Bedingfield Arms and cottages Nos 1 and 2. It is a fragment of a late 15th century house that was remodeled in the late 17th century and reduced in size, with further remodeling in the late 20th century. The exterior features a rendered and colourwashed timber frame on a brick plinth, topped with a roof of black-glazed pantiles. The house has two storeys, with the south front illuminated by two late 20th century lancet windows on the ground floor. It has a gabled roof with a central ridge stack and a late 20th century lean-to porch added to the south gable. Each floor has one 2-light late 20th century casement window. Inside, there is a late 15th century arched doorway on the south side, which remains complete but is blocked. The interior also includes a late 20th century staircase and details, and the frame has jowled principal studs that were formerly equipped with arched braces to tie beams.
