Description

Nos. 18 and 20 Lambseth Street are two houses that date back to the early 15th century, originally designed as a hall house with cross wings. The hall was floored in the early 16th century, and the houses were remodeled in the late 19th century. They are timber-framed with a machine tile roof at the front and pantiles at the rear.

The exterior features two storeys and has a late 19th-century character. It includes two full-height gabled projections with false timber studwork, each with a one-window bay. No. 18 has 2-light casements on each floor, located to the right of a 20th-century half-glazed door. No. 20 features a 4-panelled door with an overlight, positioned to the right of a 2-storey bay window fitted with 3-light cross casements. Between the gables, there are early 19th-century casements, consisting of a 3-light window over a 4-light window. The roof is gabled with a ridge stack located to the right of the center.

At the rear, there are two 2-storey cross wings; the one for No. 18 is timber-framed with an external gable-end stack, while the one for No. 20 is made of late 19th-century brick and features 3-light casements.

Inside, a stack has been inserted in the former screens passage. The north ground-floor room of No. 18 contains two early 16th-century bridging beams, with the south beam featuring roll mouldings separated by brattished moulding. The north beam has multiple roll and hollow mouldings that continue into a supporting wall post. The cross wing of No. 18 has jowled principal posts and a 2-bay crown post roof, with one square-section post having a moulded capital. Arched braces spring from above the capital in three directions. The interior of No. 20 is plain and of 19th-century character, featuring a staircase with twisted balusters and chamfered square-section newel posts.
