Description

Stradbroke Hall is a house that dates from the 15th century at the rear, with significant enlargements made in the late 16th to early 17th centuries, and further alterations in the 18th and 19th centuries. The building has an L-shaped plan and is timber framed, with the facade and left return wall plastered, while the rest is roughcast-rendered. It features a 19th-century slated roof and a paired bracketed eaves cornice. The house is two storeys high and has three windows with inset sashes that include glazing bars. The entrance has an 18th-century six-panel door topped by a semi-circular fanlight with radiating glazing bars.

The rear wing contains some notable 18th-century casement windows with original square-leaded panes and 19th-century hoodmoulds. Inside, there is an internal stack with a white brick shaft and good exposed timbering in the rear wing, which includes a former open hall with moulded and embattled beams beside the dais and cross-passage, although the latter has been mutilated. The heavy plain service cell joists are present, along with a late 16th-century inserted ceiling featuring chamfered joists and a main beam with broach stop-chamfers. In the front range, much of the structure is concealed. There is also an early 19th-century well stair with stick balusters. The house is situated at the southwest corner of a medieval rectangular moated enclosure.
