Description
Ryle House is a former public house located on Queen Street in Stradbroke. The main part of the building dates from the mid-17th century, while the cross-wing to the right was added in the early 18th century. There have been various additions and alterations from the 18th and 19th centuries. The structure is timber framed, with a late 19th-century facade made of colourwashed brick and featuring an embattled parapet. The roof is slated at the front and pantiled at the rear, with cusped and serrated bargeboards.
The building has two storeys and an attic, with four windows that include inset tripartite sashes with large panes, flat keyed arches, and chamfered reveals. The entrance features a 19th-century four-panel door, with the upper panels glazed. There is an internal stack and a gable stack on the left side. The left side incorporates one bay of the adjoining 18th-century range, and there is a lean-to addition on the right with an additional doorway. The ground floor has been significantly altered, but one room retains chamfered joists. The upper floor displays exposed framing.
A rear addition from the 18th century creates a side passage outside the original range. The cross-wing contains re-used timbers from around 1500, several of which are moulded, including a pair of principal rafters. On the former outside gable end of the main range, remnants of a band of pargetting with foliage and flowers can be seen from within the attic of the cross-wing.
