Description
This barn, attached to the north-east corner of Norton Hall, dates from the mid to late 16th century. It is constructed of red brick in English bond and features a parapet gable at the east end. The roof is currently covered with corrugated asbestos sheets, although it was originally thatched. The barn is buttressed in three bays and has ventilation loops, three to each bay, located on two levels with broad inner reveals, as well as additional loops in the gable. On the north side, there is an integral central porch that has a 19th-century lean-to roof. Inside, there is a well-preserved original two-tier side purlin roof spanning four bays, with the lower tier supported by heavy butt purlins and the upper tier being well windbraced. An original brick partition wall now forms the west gable, as the barn originally extended westward for about two bays, creating an L-plan with the house.
