Description

Crawley Hall Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the mid 16th century to the early 17th century, consisting of three sections. The earliest part is a single-storey structure with attics, while the central section has two storeys. The 17th-century crosswing at the west end also features two storeys with attics. The building is timber-framed and plastered, with the central section jettied to the south at the first floor, and the crosswing displaying an oversailing tiebeam at the south gable. The roofs are covered with plain tiles, and there are two 19th-century gabled casement dormers on the lower section. The farmhouse has two axial chimneys made of red brick from the 16th or 17th century, and a notable early 17th-century chimney of orange brick located externally on the crosswing, featuring three octagonal detached flues on moulded bases and a square 19th-century cap. Windows include small-pane casements from the 19th and 20th centuries, as well as 19th-century small-pane sashes in the crosswing. The entrance door is a 19th-century four-panelled design. There are various 18th and 19th-century extensions to the rear, which include some encasing of the main range in flint and brick at the east end. Inside, the east end features a three-cell layout typical of a mid-16th-century house. A two-bay in-line parlour block was added in the mid to late 16th century, which is long-wall jettied and has close-studding. The early 17th-century parlour crosswing includes ovolo-moulded main beams, floor joists set on edge, and an arched brick fireplace.
