Description

Arch Farm Cottage is a house, likely built in the mid 17th century, featuring two storeys and a four-cell plan. It is constructed with a timber frame and plastered exterior, topped with a pantiled roof, where the central section has mainly glazed tiles. The house includes an axial chimney from the 16th or 17th century made of red brick in two stages, with the shaft rebuilt in the 19th or 20th century, and a gable chimney from the 19th century on the right. The windows are mainly early 19th century casements, and there is a boarded entrance door from the 19th century.

Inside, the house incorporates reused materials from a mid or late 16th century building that may have originally been on this site. The chimney has two stages, with the narrow buff brickwork of the earlier stage possibly dating to the 16th century, while the second flue of red brick is certainly from the 17th century. There are back-to-back open fireplaces and a mid 16th century plank-and-muntin cross passage screen that has been repurposed to divide a chamber, featuring traces of 16th or 17th century painted decoration. The cottage also has diamond-mullioned windows from the 17th century, along with evidence of earlier 16th century windows in reused timbers. Additionally, there are large reused floor joists from the 16th century and smaller joists from the 17th century at the left-hand end.
