Description

The Old Moat House is a house dating from around 1500. It is a three-cell open hall house with two storeys, constructed from timber framing and plastered. The roof is glazed pantiles, which were formerly thatched, and there is an axial chimney with a rebuilt mid-20th century plastered brick shaft. The first storey features 18th or 19th century casement windows, with one light of each window having leaded glazing, while the ground storey has mid-20th century casements. The entrance door, added in the 20th century, is boarded with a glazed panel.

Inside, the two-bay open hall has an open truss with an arch-braced cambered tiebeam, although one brace is missing. The roof is smoke-blackened, but the crownpost at the open truss and the collar purlin are absent. The close-studding shows evidence of former doorways and diamond-mullioned windows typical for its date. Unchamfered floor joists are visible above the service cell, which consists of two bays. There are also heavy joists above the hall, with a mid-16th century insertion that includes a large chimney in the cross-entry. This chimney features an open fireplace with a cambered lintel, although the backing fireplace has been altered in the 20th century. A rear range made of plastered clay lump was added in the 19th century, and there has been significant internal remodelling and a rear extension in the mid-20th century.
