Description
Brook Farmhouse is a former farmhouse with a medieval core, significantly altered in the mid-16th century, the early 17th century, and the early 19th century. The building originally comprised a two-cell range dating back to the mid-16th century on the left, and a largely remodelled medieval section on the right. The right-hand section is a single storey with attics, while the left-hand section has two storeys with attics. The main structure is timber-framed and plastered, with 20th-century panels. The right-hand section has rebuilt front and end walls of 19th-century red brick. The roof is covered with concrete plain tiles and has four flat-roofed dormers. An early 17th-century red brick chimney is located on the left end, featuring a sawtooth shaft, and there is an internal 19th-century chimney of red brick on the right. The windows are late 20th-century casements with leaded lights. A 19th-century gabled porch with a plain-tiled roof features an arch-headed, framed, and boarded entrance door. The two cells on the left have well-preserved mid-16th-century timber framing, characterised by close-studding and blocked diamond mullioned windows, and one four-centred arched doorway. The first floor has large, unchamfered joists. During the early 17th century, the walls were raised to create two full storeys, and a staircase tower was added to the rear, featuring ovolo-mullioned windows. The right-hand cell contains elements from an open hall, but may have been completely rebuilt in the 16th century and subsequently altered.
