Description

Two houses, built as a single dwelling in the early 17th century. They have a three-cell cross-entry plan. The houses are timber-framed, now plastered, with a thatched roof punctuated by three 19th-century casement dormers covered with plaintiles. An axial chimney has been rebuilt in the 19th century using red brick, and another axial chimney is also from the 19th century. The windows are small-pane casements dating to the late 19th or early 20th century. A 20th-century porch with a boarded and battened door is situated at the cross-entry. The houses were originally constructed around 1600-1630 as a two-cell end chimney house, featuring close-studding typical of the period and chamfered floor joists laid flat. Later, in the late 17th or early 18th century, a parlour cell was added to the left side, characterized by primary-braced studding and on-edge joists. A further cell, now part of Hole in the Wall Cottage, was added in the 17th or 18th century. A 19th-century extension built of painted brick with a glazed pantiled roof was added later. It is believed the building formerly operated as the Hole in the Wall Public House.
