Description
Lodge Cottage is a house dating from the late 16th century or early 17th century. It is timber framed and rendered, with a roof made of concrete pantiles. The building has a small two-cell layout and an end chimney, standing at one and a half storeys. On the south side, there is a two-light window featuring horizontal glazing bars and a central 20th-century semi-glazed door, which is sheltered by a timber porch. An external stack is located on the west gable end, and beyond this stack is an early 20th-century one-storey addition made of colourwashed brick with a slated roof. There is also an old lean-to on the north side, with the roof extending over it.
Inside, the cottage has a two-bay frame with substantial studding and no visible bracing. A central tie beam has been removed and replaced by a later partition. The main room features a chamfered floor beam, with the joists plastered over. There is a wide lintel above a blocked fireplace, and a girding beam above the fireplace, which appears to be reused, has pegholes for studding. The service end has plain joists set flat, and the service partition retains a 17th-century door. The original side purlin roof includes some heavy wind bracing, although the roof has not been fully examined.
