Description
Gates Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the early 17th century, with extensions made in two phases during the 18th century and mid-19th century. It is a two-cell lobby entrance house with one storey and attics, constructed from timber framing and plastered. The roof is covered with plain tiles and features gabled casement dormers. A central chimney from the 17th century is made of red brick, with diagonally-set square flues on a square plinth. The windows include various small-pane casements and sashes from the 19th and 20th centuries. The entrance door, which is four-panelled and from the mid-19th century, is framed by a well-crafted timber porch that has diagonal beaded boarding and a plain-tiled gabled roof with undulating bargeboards. There are small-pane side windows, and the doorway itself has an arched head with pierced spandrels, supported by carved brackets. Inside, plain timber framing is visible, with storey-posts that have jowls supporting the upper-floor beams, which continue in increased thickness up to wall-plate level, representing an unusual variation in construction.
