Description
Bleak Hall is a house built in three stages: the 16th century, around 1600, and the 18th century. It has two storeys and features a timber-framed and plastered structure with plaintiled roofs. The axial chimney, dating from the 17th century, is made of red brick and has a central pilaster strip on both the front and back faces. The front of the house has mainly late 20th-century casement windows, while the rear features mostly 19th-century small-pane casements. There is a lean-to front entrance porch from the 20th century with an arch-headed framed and boarded door. To the left of the entrance is a 16th-century cell with two bays that has blocked diamond mullioned windows; the walls of this section were raised and a new roof was added in the 17th century. To the right is a two-cell extension from around 1600, which includes a hall and service area. Both sections display plain heavy exposed framing. The central chimney has a large lintel leading to an open fireplace in the hall, along with two plastered arched original fireplaces in the parlour and chamber. The building was known as Cold Hall until the 20th century.
