Description

Elm Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the early 17th century, with a cross-wing to the right that dates from the late 14th or early 15th century. The building features a three-cell cross passage entrance plan and stands two storeys high with attics. It is timber framed and plastered, with an exposed gable tiebeam on the left that is embattled. The roofs are covered with plaintiles, and there are two axial chimneys: one made of red brick from the 17th century and another at the rear of the parlour cell to the left, both with oblong shafts and complex moulded plinths. The windows are mainly mid-20th century casements, with some 19th-century casements at the rear. The entrance door, which is early 19th century, has six panels and is topped with a pediment. Inside the parlour to the left, there is a plaster ceiling featuring early 17th-century motifs such as roses and fleur-de-lys, along with an elliptical arched fireplace. The two-bay cross-wing to the right has substantial medieval framing with widely spaced studding. An open truss in the two-bay chamber displays long two-centred arch braces to the cambered tie beam and an altered coupled rafter roof. Evidence of a smoke blackened partition indicates that an open hall once stood on the site of the 17th-century range. A further bay was added to the front of the cross-wing in the 17th century, along with a one-and-a-half storey wing to the right. All 17th-century roofs are of the wind-braced butt purlin type. There is also a partial medieval moat surrounding the property.
