Description
The Hemplands is a house that was originally built in the 16th century and later converted into two or three dwellings. It underwent significant alterations in the 17th century, with a floor and stack being inserted and extended, and further changes in the 20th century. The building features a timber frame with exposed studding and plastered infill, topped by a thatched roof.
Originally, it had a two-bay open hall that was extended by one bay to the left, which served as the service end, and by two bays to the right, which served as the upper end. The house is one storey high with an attic. The exposed studding at the front shows larger scantling and wider spacing in the early bays, while the left side has closer studding and the right side has smaller scantling. There are boarded doors leading to the original lower bay and between the two added bays on the right. The windows include scattered 19th and 20th-century glazing bar casements, and there are two dormers with eyebrow thatching. A ridge stack was inserted in the upper bay of the original hall, and there are gable end attic lights and pentice boards.
At the rear, there are early diamond mullioned windows and a small oven outshut located behind the stack, along with a pantiled lean-to addition on the rear right. The interior has not been inspected.
