Description

This is a range of early to mid-19th century terraced houses, built of white brick, located on the east side of Berners Street. The houses are arranged in blocks of two and four, and each has two storeys and a cellar. Pilasters feature prominently on the facades. Numbers 34 and 36 have a four-window range, with a later three-storey canted bay added to number 34 and a two-storey bay to number 38. Numbers 38, 40, 42, 44 and 46 each have a six-window range. Most windows are double-hung sashes with glazing bars, but the windows in numbers 34, 38 and 40 lack glazing bars. The windows are set within plain reveals and feature stucco lintels supported by brackets. The doorways have elaborate stucco doorcases and porticos. Numbers 34 and 36 have Corinthian pilasters and modillion cornices. Numbers 38 and 40 have Tuscan porticos with plain and fluted columns. Numbers 42 and 46 feature Doric doorcases with fluted pilasters, a triglyph frieze and cornice, and number 44 has a Doric portico with fluted columns and cornice. The roofs are slate, with one gabled dormer on number 36.
