49 Berners Street is an early to mid-19th century painted brick house. It has three storeys and cellars, with a single storey wing on the south end and a two-storey wing on the north end. The house features a three-window range with double-hung sashes that have glazing bars, set in plain reveals, and adorned with stucco cornice lintels on console brackets. The south wing includes a three-light bay window, and the ground storey has two three-light windows. The central doorway is framed by an Ionic porch with fluted columns, and the front of the house slightly projects above the porch. The corners of the main block are treated with pilasters, and a narrow stucco cornice runs above the first storey windows. The roofs are covered with slate.
