Description
The Anglican Cemetery Chapel in the Old Cemetery is a Church of England chapel built in 1855 by Cooper and Peck, designed in the Gothic Revival style. It features flint cobbles with ashlar dressings and plain tile roofs, along with ashlar coped gables, moulded kneelers, and cross finials. The building has a chamfered plinth and diagonal and angle buttresses with set-offs and quoins, as well as plain bands. The chapel is laid out in a T-plan, with a central projecting gabled porch that includes a pointed and moulded doorway fitted with double plank doors and ornate iron hinges. The side elevations are adorned with single 2-light moulded and chamfered mullion windows. The main gable front above the porch showcases a pair of 2-light pointed arch windows with tracery, set in chamfered surrounds with hood moulds and label stops, featuring alternating painted flint and ashlar voussoirs. The cross wing's gable walls have similar but larger 3-light pointed arched windows. In the southeast return angle, there is a short square tower topped by an octagonal copper spire, which is complemented by ashlar panels featuring alternating lancets in gables and trefoils.
