Description
The Golden Hind Hotel is a public house built in 1936 by Caudey and Barefoot of Ipswich for Tollemache Brewery. It features red brick with stone dressings, although the windows and quoins are now painted white. The roof is covered with plain tiles and has various ornamental ridge stacks with elaborate flues, showcasing a vernacular style. The building is located on a corner site and has two storeys with a three-window range of stone mullion and transom windows, which include leaded lights and mainly hood moulds. The front facing Nacton Road is symmetrical, featuring a central five-light window above a canted bay. On either side, there are entrances with moulded arches and two-light windows set in gables, which extend down to include a single-light window on both ends, along with a further long horizontal window. The single-storey front on Maryon Road has four gables with three-light windows and a central projecting porch with a moulded-arched doorway. The right end of the building is two storeys high, featuring two gables and a balustraded roof section at the rear, which includes a prominent clock tower. The lower section of the clock tower has blind arcading, followed by clock faces and a tall pyramidal roof topped with a weather vane.
Inside, original bars remain, including the front bar with oak panelling and the rear bar featuring stained glass in an oval lantern, plasterwork cornice and borders, as well as the original bar counter and fireplace. French doors lead to an original open loggia, which is now glazed in. The entrance hall to the right contains a staircase with turned balusters. This is a finely detailed, little altered pub from the period.
