Description
The Terminal Building at Ipswich Airport, constructed between 1938 and 1939 by architects Robert Hening and Anthony M Chitty for Ipswich Airport Ltd, is a notable example of early steel-framed architecture. The building features painted brick cladding and a flat roof, with a main range and wings that project forward. It is comprised of one and two storeys, with a combination of metal and wooden framed windows. The entrance is located to the center left of the facade, which faces the airfield and includes a continuous range of windows on both floors. The design of the frame was based on a standard 15-foot square, allowing for easy extension, and the building was indeed extended within a year of its original completion. This makes it a very rare and early example of this type of construction.
