Description
The Church of St Bartholomew is a parish church built in 1896, designed by Charles Spooner. It is constructed of red brick with ashlar dressings and features a plain tile roof. The church has a nave with aisles and a chancel that share a single roof. The western entrance is marked by a projecting porch situated between two very deep gabled buttresses, topped with a copper lean-to roof. The central doorway features a triple chamfered and moulded arch with double doors. Above the doorway is a large seven-light window set within a deeply chamfered, pointed arched surround, complete with a hood mould and label stops. The gable above showcases ashlar diaper work. The aisles are adorned with three pairs of pointed arched windows, separated by buttresses. The eastern gable wall boasts a large, elaborate circular window with double mandala-shaped tracery. Inside, the church has three bay nave arcades with double chamfered and moulded arches that transition into octagonal piers with moulded bases. A contemporary marble pulpit is also present, and the eastern circular window features Art Nouveau stained glass.
