Description
The boundary wall, gatepiers, and gate at Upland Gate, facing Bishops Hill, were built around 1863 by Hine and Evans for C.A. Biddell, the director of Ransomes of Ipswich. The structure is made of red brick featuring burnt brick diaper work. The battered retaining wall is approximately 2 meters high and includes a deep frieze with diaper work in burnt headers along its entire length, which also incorporates the name "Bishops Hill" in burnt headers. The entrance drive is marked by a single large iron gate filled with lattice work, supported on slim piers topped with spiked metal ball finials. This feature forms a group with Upland Gate.
