Description
Gothic House is a villa built between 1851 and 1857 by Henry Ringham, possibly designed by architect J. Phipson. It is constructed in a Tudor-bethan style, using old materials and imitating details from Tudor buildings in Ipswich. The house has two and a half storeys and features a symmetrical arrangement of windows, with a prominent projecting gabled bay that includes an entrance at the corner. The roof is tiled, adorned with enriched bargeboards, drooping finials, and a multi-form brick stack on the rear gable. The ground floor is made of flint cobbles, while the first floor is half-timbered with stucco panels, showcasing fleur-de-lis pargetting in the gable.
The richly carved corner-posts, featuring lion brackets inspired by those on the Ancient House in Ipswich, support an enriched bressummer that bears the date 1634, indicating a jetty. The windows include transom and mullion designs with leaded lights, as well as oriels on the front and side gables, which are modeled after those from the Neptune on Fore Street in Ipswich. The entrance porch has a pent roof and a five-centred arched opening, leading to a one-piece panelled door decorated with raised and fielded lozenges. The rear door is intricately carved, likely serving as sample specimens from the 1844 House of Lords competition.
