Description

An early 19th century grey gault brick house, situated on Museum Street and facing north. The building’s main frontage is set at a right angle to the street, creating a pleasant forecourt with numbers 18 and 20, and making an interesting group of early 19th century buildings with the junction of Museum Street and Arcade Street. The house is three storeys high, with cellars, and has a five-window range overall, incorporating a quadrant corner section with one window range, a one-window range on the east front, and a three-window range on the north front. It features double-hung sash windows with glazing bars, set within moulded stucco architraves. Pilasters separate the window ranges on the first and second storeys, while the ground floor windows are set in slightly recessed panels. A raised stucco band runs at the level of the first-floor window sills. A central doorway on the north front is framed by a stucco Ionic doorcase with fluted engaged columns, a frieze, and a modillion pediment. The roof is slate covered, with a modillion eaves cornice. Numbers 10, 14 to 32 (even), form a group with 1 to 11 (odd), number 13 (Old Museum Rooms), and numbers 14 and 16, Arcade Street.
