Description

Numbers 18 and 20 Museum Street are a pair of early 19th century houses made of grey gault brick, featuring small wings at both the north and south ends that are lower than the main block. These houses are positioned at right angles to number 22, creating a triangular forecourt that enhances the picturesque quality of the group at the junction of Museum Street and Arcade Street.

The buildings are two storeys tall, with attics and basements, and have a total of four windows across, with two on the central block and one on each of the projecting wings. The return faces of the wings also contain one window each. The windows are double-hung sashes with glazing bars, set within moulded stucco architraves. The central windows of the main block are located in slightly recessed brick panels, while the first-storey windows feature moulded stucco cornices and the ground-storey windows have triangular pediments. A raised stucco band runs along the level of the first-storey window sills.

The doorways are situated at the inside angle of the projecting wings, featuring brick semi-circular arched openings and approached by steps with iron handrails. The roofs are slate, hipped on the wings, and have modillion cornices. The main block includes one 20th-century flat-headed dormer.

These houses form a group with nearby buildings, including number 10 and numbers 14 to 32 (even), as well as numbers 1 to 11 (odd), and number 13 (Old Museum Rooms) along with numbers 14 and 16 on Arcade Street.
