Description
St Mary's Cottage, formerly listed as Nos 1 & 2 Churchyard, is a picturesque group of 15th to 16th century timber-framed and plastered cottages, now serving as a tenement. They are located on the north side of St Mary at the Elms Churchyard, with the pleasant greensward of the graveyard situated between them and the church. The cottages are two storeys high. The eastern cottage features a cross wing at the west end and a jettied upper storey across the entire front. This cross wing displays exposed joists and remnants of brackets with capitals and shafts. It includes a bay window with casements that have glazing bars and small panes. The windows throughout are generally small casements with glazing bars. There are remains of a moulded wall plate and part of a billet moulded bressumer. The main block has a range of mullioned lights on the first storey and is said to date back to 1467. The cottage at the west end has fewer original features. The roofs are tiled. St Mary's Cottage, along with the Church of St Mary at the Elms, No 25 Smith's Almshouses, and Nos 29 to 33 (odd), form a group.
