Description
Smith's Almshouses is a mid-18th century red brick building located on Elm Street. It stands two storeys high and includes cellars, featuring a seven-window range with double-hung sashes that have glazing bars, all set in flush cased frames. The windows are widely spaced across the facade. The central entrance consists of a six-panel door framed by a wood doorcase with a moulded architrave, panelled reveals, and a flat hood supported by brackets. Above the door is a rectangular fanlight with vertical glazing bars. There is also a panel above the doorway inscribed with the words: "Erected in the year 1760 for the benefit of 12 poor women of honest life and conversation of the age of 50 or upwards being Communicants of the Church of England as by law Established." The roof is tiled and features two square red brick chimney stacks. Smith's Almshouses is part of a group that includes the Church of St Mary at the Elms, St Mary's Cottage, and Nos 25, 29 to 33 (odd).
