Description
The Ipswich and East Suffolk Hospital Entrance Block, built in 1836, is a significant part of the hospital complex that closes the vista to Berners Street. The original architect was John Whitling, and the building has undergone various alterations and additions in the 19th century and later. It is constructed of grey gault brick and features a parapet and a moulded brier cornice. The building stands three storeys tall and has five window openings, which contain double-hung sashes with glazing bars set in plain reveals. The lower storeys have stucco cornice lintels above the windows, which are separated by wide brick pilasters.
Prominently, a central stucco Ionic portico projects from the front, supported by two pairs of plain columns that extend through two storeys above a balustraded podium. The central entrance door is accessed by stone steps. Above the portico, the central section slightly protrudes on the second storey, featuring a brick open pediment and a central semi-circular headed window. Flanking the central block are two-storey wings of similar design, each with one window opening, a parapet, and a stucco cornice that extends across the front and around the portico. The wings are framed by pilasters.
