Description
This drinking fountain, built in 1862, is located in Christchurch Park, Ipswich. It is signed by F Arrow and was a gift from John Brett. The fountain is constructed of stone over a brick core and features a stepped plinth with an inscription on the north side that records the gift. The structure has a square section, with its base enhanced by projecting bows on each face. The superstructure is stepped back with moulded rebates. The main part has rebated corners that are fitted with annulated columns topped with stiff-leaf capitals. Each main side of the fountain has a central arched recess, which contains wrought-iron scrollwork and fountain taps, although only one tap remains in place, having been replaced in the 20th century. The frieze includes roundels and square mouldings, while the cornice is decorated with stylised waterleaf. At the top, the fountain is surmounted by a central obelisk finial, with corner finials below that are separated by giant anthemions.
