Description
Ipswich School was founded in 1400, and the current building was constructed in 1852, designed by Mr. Fleury, an Ipswich architect. Built in the Elizabethan style using red brick, it features a symmetrical layout with a central block that includes an octagonal tower, flanking wings, and end pavilions. The tower, central block, and end pavilions are highlighted by octagonal buttresses. The tower and wings are topped with castellated parapets and have moulded brick string courses. The end pavilions display a form of Dutch gable. The tower rises four storeys, the central block and end pavilions are three storeys, while the wings are two storeys high. The windows consist of casements with mullions and transoms, adorned with moulded brick hood moulds. Two-storey brick bays with castellated parapets extend from the end pavilions. A central porch projects from the base of the tower, and gabled porches are located at the centre of each wing. The roof is tiled and features groups of shafted chimney stacks. Ipswich School and the Chapel are part of a group.
