Description

A range of early to mid-19th century houses built of grey gault brick, located at 2-6 Northgate Street and 1 Carr Street. The building is three storeys high and originally featured a five-window front. The north and south ends of the building project slightly, each with a three-light window on the first storey. A return front of one window range is visible on Carr Street. The windows are double-hung sashes, mostly without glazing bars, except for No. 6 which retains them. They are set in plain reveals with stucco cornice lintels. A central doorway is accentuated by a stucco doorcase with fluted Corinthian pilasters, a frieze, a cornice, and a stucco panel above. The ground floor has been altered with 20th-century shops. The roof is slate.

The listed buildings on Northgate Street, excluding the garden wall to No. 9, form a group with No. 43 (Great White Horse Hotel) on Tavern Street, No. 2 Great Colman Street, and part of Nos. 2 to 12 (even) on St Margaret's Plain. Additionally, Nos. 2 (including No. 1 Carr Street) and Nos. 4 to 16 (even) form a group with Nos. 2, 2A, and Nos. 4 to 10 (even) on Great Colman Street.
