Description
Castle Cottage is a house dating from the early 18th century, with an earlier core. It has two storeys and is constructed with a timber frame and plaster, featuring ashlar lining and a pantiled roof with overhanging eaves. The building includes two internal chimney stacks with plain red brick shafts. There are three windows, which are small-paned sashes set in flush frames. The entrance features an early 19th-century six-panelled door with raised fielded panels, panelled pilasters, and an entablature adorned with roundels.
Inside, the layout follows a basic 16th-century two-cell plan, with a third unit added on the west side. The upper floor shows evidence of a significant roof-raising from the 18th century. At the rear, there is a lean-to made of timber framing and red brick. On the ground floor, a small parlour is decorated with a random collection of early 19th-century wall paintings. These artworks depict various subjects, including a watermill in a rocky landscape, a seated man who may be the owner with a maidservant, Daniel in the lions' den, a sea battle, two large buildings likely representing barracks, and a woman playing with a baby. The origins of these paintings are unknown, but they are believed to exhibit French influences.
