Description
Shadingfield War Memorial is a First World War memorial located prominently in the churchyard of the Church of St John the Baptist, which is a Grade I listed building. The memorial faces the main entrance gate and is overlooked by Church Farmhouse, a Grade II listed building.
The memorial features an ornately carved Celtic stone wheel-head cross that rests on a three-stepped base, which is set on a square stone pad sunk into the ground. The front face of the cross is decorated with relief carved interlace.
The inscription is incised into the front faces of the steps in painted letters. It reads: on the top step "TO THE GLORY OF/ GOD", on the middle step "AND IN MEMORY OF/ OUR GLORIOUS DEAD/ 1914 – 1918", and on the bottom step are four names. The phrase "TO THE GLORY OF" is inscribed in an arc above the word "GOD".
