Description

The South Croxton War Memorial is a First World War memorial, erected around 1920, made of granite and square in plan. It is located at the entrance to the churchyard of St John the Baptist, which is listed as Grade II*. The memorial features a three-stepped square base, a trapezoidal plinth, and a short shaft that tapers in rectangular section to a Celtic wheel-head cross. Both the shaft and the cross head are adorned with interlace and plain medallion ornamentation, as well as Celtic fret edging that resembles a regularly entwined rope. A slate tablet on the north side of the plinth displays the dedicatory inscription for the First World War, which reads IN MEMORIAM / 1914 - 1918 / [Names].
